CPS Celebrates School Social Work Week Columbus Public SCHOOLS

Columbus Public Schools (CPS) Social Workers/Interventionists are trained professionals in the field of social work.

They are the link between the home, school and community supporting social-emotional and academic success. CPS Social Workers/Interventionists are available to all students and families.

Social Workers/Interventionists collaborate with the principal, school counselor and staff to best meet the needs of each student.

Services can include: 

  • Individual work with students and families
  • Crisis intervention
  • Utilizing community resources 
  • Participating in the assessment team for at-risk students 
  • Aiding in student and family transitions
The Roles of School Social Workers/Interventionists

  • Promote regular school attendance
  • Aid families in crisis or transition
  • Address basic needs of students/families
  • Link students/families with medical, financial, & social emotional supports
  • Promote parent education & support opportunities
  • Identify factors in the student’s home, school and community that may be a barrier to learning
  • Work collaboratively with, as well as provide direct support to staff and outside agencies
  • Participate in IEP meetings as needed
  • Partner in collaborative meetings with school staff and community agencies(ie. Re-entry, Attendance, Suspension, Professional Partners, etc.)
  • Promote utilization of community resources to strengthen the individual student & family unit.
  • Consult & collaborate with stakeholders to meet student/family needs
  • Advocate for school/ community services
  • Promote student safety and wellness (ie. assist in safety plans and assessment)
