Columbus Mayor Jim Bulkley recently signed a proclamation declaring March as “Red Cross Month” throughout the city.
Bulkley signed the proclamation and read it out loud during the March 20th Columbus City Council meeting, citing how the organization is known for providing emergency shelter, food and comfort to families displaced by home fires and other disasters; donating life-saving blood for cancer patients, accident victims and other life-threatening conditions; and supporting military members, veterans and their families, among many other things.
“Whereas during American Red Cross Month we celebrate the humanitarian spirit of Nebraskans and reaffirm our commitment to helping ensure no one faces a crisis alone,” Bulkley read. “Whereas caring for one another is at the heart of our community and exemplified by the people of Columbus, whose simple acts of kindness through the Red Cross provide help and hope in people’s most difficult moments, continuing the life-saving legacy of Clara Barton, who founded the organization more than 140 years ago to prevent and alleviate human suffering.”
American Red Cross representatives Molly Pofahl and Kyle Jensen were on hand for the proclamation signing, noting their appreciation to Mayor Bulkley and the community as a whole for their ongoing support.
“We’re grateful for Mayor Bulkley and the Columbus community for recognizing and being supportive of the Red Cross,” Jensen said.
The Red Cross Month celebration has been an annual tradition since 1943, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first Red Cross Month proclamation.
A blood drive is currently scheduled to take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, April 17, at Columbus Fire Department, 4630 Howard Blvd. To schedule an appointment, redcrossblood.org, type in the local zip code and search by date.
