On Saturday, July 9th at 2 pm, Renae Hunt from the Humanities Nebraska will come to the library to talk about what it was like to be a child pioneer from first-hand accounts.
With over 350,000 emigrants traveling to Oregon, or on the Mormon or California Trails, one in five were under the age of 16. Many of these youths kept journals. This program discusses how these children traveled and narrates some of the stories from their journals. Renae Hunt is a native Nebraska farm girl. She has been an active historical re-enactor and worked as a museum educator for several years. She traveled on the Mormon Trail in 1997 and followed the Lewis and Clark Trail as a graduate student in the summer of 2003. She is the co-founder of Traveling Historical Programs Inc., which presents hands-on living history programs. She is also a visiting professor at several colleges and universities.
