It only takes residents just a few minutes to answer 17 easy survey questions and have their thoughts about local public transportation taken into consideration.

The City of Columbus, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Platte County, the Columbus Area United Way and other local partners are seeking the Columbus region’s input for the “2023 Public Transit Community Survey."

"As one of the community partners, Columbus Area United Way is excited to be moving forward with gathering information from the public about transportation needs within our region. As a human services organization, we hear transportation is a barrier for many in our community to maintain consistent employment, school attendance, appointments, and access to general human needs,” said Columbus Area United Way Executive Director Hope Freshour, who is also a Fourth Ward city council member.

“The survey is an opportunity for community members to provide feedback on the realities of transportation needs as well as what transportation could look like in our community for the future.”

The survey is easy to navigate, as it features numerous multiple-choice questions and a few write-in spots.

“Input from residents is critical as it will help us better understand how public transportation could help alleviate barriers to work or school attendance,” CCC-Columbus Campus President Kathy Fuchser, who noted she was initially approached about the campus being a stop on the transportation line and joined in to help CCC students lacking reliable transportation to get to school or work.

Corinne Donahue is a senior transportation planner with Olsson Associates, an engineering consulting and design firm out of Omaha, and part of the NDOT Mobility Management Team. She said the survey had more than 300 responses before Memorial Day.

“We’ve had a wonderful response and just encourage people to fill it out. Thank you to everyone who has so far,” Donahue said. “The goal is to have representation from every audience we have in the Columbus region and make sure we have representation from as many people as we can.”
