Columbus Police Department Capt. Todd Thalken is urging residents to be safe driving through town and to follow the law as road construction continues on 23rd Street.

The CPD is fully aware of the driving inconveniences the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s complete reconstruction of 23rd Street has caused. But Thalken said it's important people exercise good judgment while on the road.

Columbus Police have recently observed cars drive through the American Legion and Wunderlich's Catering & Barley Shoppe parking lots to avoid the intersection at Third Avenue and 23rd Street. This is against the law, he noted.

There have also been many reports of cars driving through residential neighborhoods in this area at high speeds. The public is reminded to not drive fast through neighborhoods and to follow the posted speed limits at all times.

Thalken offered some things to keep in mind before hitting the road as construction continues:

  • Leave earlier
  • Find an alternative route
  • Expect the unexpected
  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you
  • Keep up with traffic
  • Be patient
